Weaving Together Artist Talk, Back to Work, Painting with Acrylics

December was a blur for me. My family and I went on a trip to Los Angeles, then back to NYC, then Arizona for the holidays. I am very happy we could spend so much time with my extended family, but I am exhausted and still readjusting to East Coast time.

I am now back in the studio, back at work on client projects, and getting ready for my first artist talk of the year.

Weaving Together: Artists’ Panel for Belonging Exhibition

Belonging, a fiber art exhibit featuring myself, Kimberly Bush, and Traci Johnson, has been extended! We are going to all be part of the talk Weaving Together in February. I’m excited to share more about my practice and learn more about Traci and Kimberly’s work as well!

When: Sunday, February 12th, noon to 2pm
Where: Old Stone House (we may also have access virtually on Zoom—tbd)

RSVP here.

Back to Work

When we say ‘back to work’ we usually mean back to the office. But I have been taking care of a new baby since the day she was born, so I feel like I never stopped working. Parenting is work. Breastfeeding is work. Motherhood is work. I went back to my client work end of 2022. I’m back on a handful of projects, including Public Art Master plans, Artist Housing, and a Creative Space Feasibility Study. They are all unique little monsters. I love the work that I do for my clients, but it is also hard to switch gears. I’m working on a new schedule for 2023 to help me stay focused on my artwork, my clients, and my family. I try to focus on only one of these things every day, but as any entrepreneur/artist/mother knows, you do the best you can and then you live with your blended life.

I am not really sure if our childcare is going to be enough or, quite frankly, even work, but we will see.

Painting with Acrylics

If you have been following my work then you probably know me as a fiber artist. My first dabbling in art was actually in ceramics in High School, then printmaking at the University of Southern California. I only took a few classes but I fell in love with the printing press and continued doing printmaking when I lived in the Basque Country after college. I was also very into making free form dresses and soon after had a job running production and coming up with designs for Betabrand in San Francisco. In my recent commitment to my art practice I’ve been focusing on weaving and soft sculpture, but I’ve always wanted to paint and get back to ceramics. So here I am, painting and making (hard) sculpture.

This season I’m taking a Materials + Techniques painting class via NYC Crit Club with Caitlin MacBride. I love her use of color and how she finds and researches what she paints. I’m also taking a Wheel Ceramics class via Gasworks with Lilian Wu.

Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, 5 x 7in, Acrylic on wood panel

Here is a small painting I did with acrylics and an analogous color palette.

I also reglazed some ceramics so will report back soon. My studio still has my watercolors on the wall, waiting for me to finish them and get them out to share with you.
