Step Inside My Studio: Join Me at Sunset Park Open Studios 2024

I’m thrilled to be participating in Sunset Park Open Studios 2024 from October 18-20 and would love to invite you to visit my studio during the event! This is a chance for me to open my doors and give you an up-close look at the work I’ve been pouring my heart into over the past year.

Much of my recent work explores the themes of motherhood, family, and the passage of time. As a mother, I've been balancing the everyday tasks of raising a child with the emotional complexities of life, and these experiences have deeply influenced my art. I often start with quick sketches based or referencing my ultrasound printouts, which then evolve into more complex pieces. Whether it's turning family stories into clay sculptures or using cochineal ink to create paintings, I’m always searching for ways to connect the past with the present.

I’m drawn to the idea of double consciousness (see “The Souls of Black Folk” by W.E.B. Du Bois or listen to this Overthink podcast episode, or Wikipedia)—basically experiencing multiple perspectives at once due to being marginalized in an oppressive society. You'll see how I combine ancient materials and traditional techniques with modern elements, like firing clay forms with glaze decals or referencing modern ephemera from my life as a mom. Each piece reflects the tension and beauty of this dual experience.

I’d love to share more about my process and how these works come to life.
