Recap: Making Sugar Skulls in DC

We gathered last Wednesday night at Colony Club to decorate sugar skulls for Dia de Los Muertos. We started the night by sharing the fall traditions that we love most, including eating apple cider donuts, picking apples, breaking out our sweaters and eating cornbread and chili.

We talked about the traditions of Dia de los Muertos in Central and South America, where families decorate altars welcoming the souls of their deceased family members for a visit after the gates of heaven open on midnight of October 31st. We also watched the trailer for the Disney movie COCO to get inspiration for the colors and decorations of our calaveras and Dia de los Muertos.

We had bright colors of frosting, feathers, sequin, glitter, and foil paper to transform our white skulls into calaveras ready for an alter.

We talked about the latest crafts we’d done.. Or been meaning to get to as we piped frosting into faces.

We also sipped on Mexican hot chocolate with a shot of bourbon. The recipe was from Jar of Lemons and was easily made in a crock pot!

 

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Hiland Dairy Organic 2% Milk

  • 7 Tbsp cocoa powder

  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

  • 1/4 tsp cayenne powder

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in slow cooker.

  2. Whisk until the dry ingredients are blended into the milk, syrup, and vanilla.

  3. Cook on low for 1 hour (or until hot), stirring occasionally.

  4. Pour into a mug and add a shot of bourbon.

  5. Serve and enjoy!

We ended the night by sharing our creations and left with a new fall tradition.
