Artwork for The Razor's July Edition

I recently created artwork for The Razor Literary Magazine’s July edition. I created artwork for their August 2023 edition (for the writings Jack and Jill Get Up and Go by Diana Mullins and Mucking About by Jennifer Brown). I love this type of work because it pushes me to try new things and create new work! These new pieces are both down with oil sticks on paper and inspired by the literary writing linked below each image.

To create the works, I first started by reading each essay and story and then thinking about them. I brainstormed some ideas of both how I wanted to make the artwork and also keywords related to the writing. Then I spent the next few days thinking and sketching ideas very quickly with a brush pen. Finally, when I had sometime alone in the studio, which is very rare right now as I’m normally with my new baby all day, I played around and eventually came up with these new works. I looked up a couple reference images but mainly went off my quick sketches and thoughts.

I recently got some new oil sticks and was excited to use them. Thank you The Razor for the opportunity!
