Shibori Indigo Dyeing in the Most Beautiful Gatehouse

Kings County Distillery Chalkboard.jpg

Kings County Distillery is one of my favorite bars. It’s nestled in one of two gatehouses at the entry of Brooklyn Navy Yard.

We hosted a shibori indigo dyeing workshop last night inside, in the other gatehouse because it had been raining. I feel extremely lucky because this space is gorgeous!

We started off with some strong cocktails from the bar, then got into introductions and sharing our favorite shades of blue. Deep blue, green cast, ocean, navy — so many variations of one color! Next, we reviewed some folding techniques and got to preparing our textiles.

Normally in my workshops, we all dye tea towels, but this time I had tea shirts and even beach towels. Guests also brought their own items to dye, so we had a variety of items to play around with.

One student started arranging theses wooden tiles we used and I had to copy her and take my own photo.

I loved seeing the different approaches everyone had to their own textiles. We dyed in a few buckets set up in the middle of the room and then waited for the light green textiles to turn a deep blue.

Next, we had our reveal! Each person untied their textile and shared their creation. Each one was unique and beautiful.

I love dyeing with indigo and it was super fun to do this workshop at Kings County Distillery!

If you are interested in trying this out yourself, check out my online shibori indigo dyeing course.

I’ll be hosting have another shibori indigo dyeing workshop at Kings County in September! I hope to see you there!
