Backyard cyanotype experimenting, new series in progress, upcoming shows in Red Hook, South Slope, and Nomad, Manhattan

Jaquard SolarFast on wood panel - work in progress, Stephanie Eche

I’ve been working on my series of paintings (on wood, linen, and ceramic), but sometimes you just have to work on something totally different.

Earlier this week we had some nice weather in Brooklyn and I decided to test out some Jacquard SolarFast. Long story short, I was way too eager and ambitious in trying to master this new medium on a large piece of wood, but I actually like the outcome and I will work back into it later to keep building on this piece. For now, it will be background artwork for my husband’s Zoom meetings.

I coated this wood panel with gesso then used Jacquard SolarFast on top. I partially exposed in my studio, moved around as exposed, and then took it to my backyard for more exposure. I had dried flowers on top the whole time. The flowers were given to me by my mom on my daughter's first birthday. I’ve been making cyanotype artwork using flowers given to me for memorable life events (see my De La Nada series in progress).

I’m still working on my series of paintings inspired by experience of becoming a mom. I have a working artist statement and a good number of small paintings done that I’ll probably share on my website soon. For now, here is one recent painting in progress. Each work is rooted in a quick drawing that I did in the early days postpartum or in my journey to/of motherhood.
